Did You Know?

Concert Facts

Some of the band’s favorite songs to play live are Russian Roulette, Fade Into (the Ocean), …And All The Other Colors, and Now is the Time.

Minus the Machine

The album was recorded completely in Knoxville at Brian’s home studio – the first album to be recorded at a home studio since before The Autumn Effect.

The instrumental part of “Battle Lust” was written about three years before the album came out – lyrics were finally written to match in 2012. Ironically, it was the last song recorded for Minus the Machine.

One night while very sick, Brian woke up in the middle of the night, stumbled down to his home studio and composed a piano part that he never recalls recording. When he awoke the next day he was surprised to find this recording on his computer; the part later turned out to be the piano on “Forever Fields (Sowing Season).”

The inspiration and title for “Forever Fields (Sowing Season)” came from the Brand New song “Sowing Season” – Jesse is a big fan of the band.

“Backlash” originally started out as a song that was over seven minutes long. The band shortened it down on the record and it basically became the companion piece to “Forever Fields (Sowing Season).”

“Dancing with the Dead” was written from the point of view of someone being interrogated; essentially everyone (friends, family) is turning on them and they’re caught in a lie. Jesse thought it would be interesting to write a song about incorporating colors with emotions and relating it to the story. There is a pretty large color theme throughout the album as a whole.

The song “Knives” is about a soldier “probably Vietnam-era” returning from war with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

“…And All The Other Colors” contains a sample from a 1950′s acid test (an experiment where the effects of ingesting acid were observed with a female subject).

Before the sample mentioned above, Jesse’s vocals are played in reverse: “Wonder, and wonder, wonder what they mean.”

The bonus track “Baptized in Fire” was deemed “too mainstream” by the band so they diced it up and made it into the album track “Tightrope.”

The songs “Tightrope” and “Baptized in Fire” share the same verses.

Feeding the Wolves

Rage Against the Machine was rehearsing in the studio next to where 10 Years was recording this album in Los Angeles. The band stated that hearing RATM rock out every day gave them inspiration for some of the heavier songs on the record.

Jesse designed and drew the cover of the album himself.

Division

“Dying Youth” is a song Jesse wrote to his mother; the track is about growing up so quickly in life.

Before the album came out the band released a demo of the song “All Your Lies” on their MySpace page that featured heavier guitars and some screaming.

The song “Alabama” was originally titled “Alabama Slammer” and is about a certain politician from around the time the album was written.

“Proud of You” is about Brad Renfro, who “Wasteland” was written about.

“Russian Roulette” was originally titled “Chemical Christ.”

The Autumn Effect

There are three different music videos for “Wasteland.”

“Paralyzing Kings” was originally titled “Parasite Eve,” but the name had to be changed due to a video game existing of the former name. The song is about betraying a best friend.

“Insects” = in sex.

The song “The Autumn Effect,” along with several other tracks on the album, was inspired by a dream that Jesse had before they made the record.

KATHY

The abbreviation KATHY in Killing All That Holds You comes from the name of one of Jesse’s ex-girlfriends.

“R.E.S.T.” is a song about betrayal by a close friend.

“All White” was written from the perspective of a dead person at a funeral.

The songs “Wasteland” and “Through the Iris” were rerecorded for The Autumn Effect in 2005.

An EP of Killing All That Holds You came out before the full-length album and features the following tracks: Wasteland, Seven, At A Loss, Sillhouette of a Life, All White and R.E.S.T.. The mixing of the tracks on the EP is different than the full-length album.
